Introduction to Short Cruises
Thinking about taking a short getaway? A two-night cruise might be on your radar. Whether you're a seasoned cruiser or a newbie, this kind of trip can offer a taste of adventure and relaxation in a compact package. But is a 2 night cruise really worth it? Is it just too short? Let’s break down the reasons why you should consider this mini-vacation and the reasons it might not be the best option for you.
Short break Cruises from Australia
Short cruises are usually defined up to 5 nights and is a huge part of the Australian cruise market. A quick check online and as at the time of writing this blog post, there are 304 cruises for sale in the range of 2 to 5 night cruises. For 2 night cruises there are 12 cruises available with 6 of those cruises being sold by Princess, 2 by Royal Caribbean and 4 by Carnival. Most of the cruises are port to the same port e.g. Brisbane to Brisbane cruise but some are one port to another port e.g. Brisbane to Sydney cruise.
I am focussing on is a 2 night cruise worth it but the same questions could be asked: Is a 3 night cruise worth it? Is a short cruise worth it? I think the reasons below apply for most short break cruises.
Unlike most of the blogs you will read, I have actually been on a number of short breaks including 2 night cruises so the reasons are ones I have experienced.
Reasons to Take a 2 Night Cruise
There are plenty of reasons why a two-night cruise can be a fantastic choice! First off, it's a quick escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Just imagine leaving your everyday responsibilities behind for a couple of days! You can enjoy a scenic voyage, possibly explore a new port, and indulge in cruise ship amenities all within a short time frame.
Another plus is that it’s more accessible than longer cruises, making it easier to fit into your schedule (and your budget!). Two-night cruises often provide good deals, especially for those looking to book last-minute getaway trips. The prices both in $ per cruise or $ per night can be incredible. Look out for cruises that are mini repositioning cruises or part of a longer world cruises that are just picking up passengers in one port on the way. A great example is Crown Princess that I cover on my other blog post linked here
And let's not forget about the onboard experiences; from dining to entertainment, there’s usually something for everyone. These few days away can offer a refreshing change of scenery without the need for extensive planning.
A 2 night cruise can be a great taster for cruising to see if you like the experience before you commit to a longer trip. It is also a great way to try a new cruise line to see if you like the vibe or to try a new ship that you might want to travel for a longer period on. You take a 2 night cruise and try a different cabin type, maybe try a Suite.
If you are a group all with busy schedules, then a 2 night cruise is the perfect chance to all meet up and have a great weekend together.
Some of the cruise lines offer a cruise theme weekend, Carnival with their 80's cruises (pictured) or comedy cruises can make it even more fun especially for groups. These do tend to be 3 night cruises rather than the blog post 2 night cruises.
If you are loyalty focused then the nights of the cruise will count towards your loyalty tier. However, one of the little recognised benefits of a 2 night cruise with Princess is that their loyalty has two ways to climb the tiers, nights or cruises. To reach the top tier loyalty of Elite with Princess then you need 15 cruises or 150 days. Technically you could take 15 , 2-night cruise and reach Elite tier loyalty with just 30 night cruising. A little extreme I know but just a few of the short break cruises and soon see you climbing the ranks with Princess.
Reasons to not Take a 2 night cruise.
On the flip side, there are valid arguments against taking a 2-night cruise. For starters, the duration might feel rushed. You may find yourself wishing you had more time to truly relax or explore the destination. Depending on the cruise line, many activities and excursions can feel crammed into your short stay.
You might feel like you have just unpacked and then need to pack again (cruises down under tip : keep your luggage to a minimum, try and keep it to hand luggage only)
Moreover, consider the destination options. A 2 night cruise is often just out to sea and back so you don't see another port of call. However, those cruises that do sail from one port to another e.g. a Sydney to Brisbane cruise will allow you to see another port but then you need to factor in a flight back or from your home port.
Short cruises can be very wild (but fun) especially the themed ones with some groups drinking to excess so be aware of the cruise theme before you go. I personally wouldn't take children on those type of cruises. This would definitely be more likely with Carnival cruises Australia than say a Princess cruise from Brisbane to Sydney.
Lastly, cruise costs can add up quickly. While the base fare may look enticing, keep in mind additional expenses like excursions, drinks and specialty dining, and gratuities. These extras might make the overall experience feel less like a budget-friendly option. Cruises are promoting more short breaks because they can often increase their key performance indicator of on-board spend per passenger.
The Verdict -is a short cruise worth it?
So, is it worth taking a 2-night cruise? Having been on a number of short break cruises, I would say yes a 2-night cruise is worth it but it all depends on what you're looking for. If you're after a quick escape with the perks of a cruise experience and entertainment onboard, you might find it fulfilling! However, if you're seeking a deeper travel adventure or longer relaxation, it might be worth looking at longer cruise options.
In conclusion, weigh your priorities and preferences. A two-night cruise can be a fantastic way to recharge your batteries, but ensure it aligns with your travel expectations and style.
